THE ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION of Barbados (AAB) still isn’t budging.
Local track and field’s governing body is sticking to its guns regarding the non-selection of Shane Brathwaite, Greggmar Swift and Ryan Brathwaite for the Rio Olympics after the three sprint hurdlers failed to meet the qualifying time during the AAB’s stipulated period.
The AAB reaffirmed its stance in an official statement sent to SUNSPORT, responding to public criticisms over the contentious omissions after the hurdlers were left off the Olympic squad despite having met the IAAF’s qualifying criteria.
“The notion that an athlete should be selected for national duty based on a performance that was established almost one year prior to the scheduled competition for which he or she is seeking selection would be, to say the least, reckless on our part and certainly can’t be in the best interest of the athlete,” wrote the AAB in the release.
