STUDENTS OF ST LEONARD’S BOYS’ Secondary will be making beautiful music in their new music technology studio lab thanks to the Legacy Foundation whose $75 000 contribution made it possible.

Officially handed over yesterday morning at a ceremony, the lab “ushers in an enhanced approach to the delivery of music education” at the Richmond Gap, St Michael school, and features “digital audio work stations each with a laptop computer, a Midi keyboard, an audio interface and the relevant sequencing and notation software packages”.

Students will be exposed to beat making, sequencing, recording and notating music all at the current international industry standard, which would assist with CSEC and CVQ exam assessments.

In addition to equipment, the foundation, through an initiative of members of the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited, donated 24 musical instruments that will go towards reviving the school’s concert band.

Ayo Burrowes, the foundation’s trustee, said they were “happy to make the $75 000 investment” in the school.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones urged the boys to do well in music as they were part of the musical “revolution” taking place at the school, and to take “perfect care of the room”.

Principal Joseph Maynard said the lab was a dream realised and noted that music teacher Pernell Farley worked hard to bring it to fruition.

There are two other music labs – at Combermere and Christ Church Foundation. (GBM)
