Chess players opt out

THE Barbados Chess Federation (BCF) National Championships has been devalued with the withdrawal of seven of the 12 players from the tournament, which begins today at the Bridgetown Chess Centre, Cavans Lane.

Among the seven who withdrew are the island’s highest rated player Orlando Husbands, along with veteran international masters Terry Farley and Delisle Warner, Lawrence Depradine, Kemp Lynch, Justin Parsons and Bryan Prescod.

Despite the setback, president of the BCF, Allan Herbert, still believes that the remaining players have a fighting chance in the competition.

Pointing out that the withdrawals were for different reasons, he said the main one was because the players were unavailable. (RA)
