EDWIN “MANDELA” WARD came from a game down to defeat Jamal Branch in the match of the night when the round of 64 in the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited Monarchs Of The Court road tennis tournament concluded on Saturday night at the Flow hard courts.

Wearing his customary cap and displaying the usual look of distaste whenever the officials made a contrary call, Ward rode on the support of the majority of the spectators to defeat the unflappable Branch 15-21, 21-12, 21-13.

Branch played his languid style of tennis to hold the upper hand before Ward locked the scores at eight before fading as Branch kept the ball in the southpaw’s backhand.

With Ward being frustrated by Branch’s patience and ability to return almost every ball, the former reached 14-16 but got just one more point before losing the opening game. (KB)
