New fire academy on way

BEFORE THE END of this year, one of the Caribbean’s premier
state-of-the-art firefighting training facilities will be opened in Barbados.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Gayle Francis-Vaughan, gave the assurance while speaking at a church service held at the Western Light Church of the Nazarene yesterday to celebrate the 61st anniversary of the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) and kick off activities for Fire Service Week.

The Barbados Fire Academy, as it will be known, will be located in the expanded annex of the Arch Hall Fire Station in St Thomas.

Acknowledging the process to reach this stage was longer than anticipated as a result of a few obstacles, Francis-Vaughan said she was pleased that the station would be bigger and much better, and would be a “regional centre of excellence in firefighting”. (SDB Media)
