A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE designation does not mean that all development in the area comes to a halt.
And, said Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, the “whim and fancy of a couple of people who love trees and buildings because they are old” cannot trump the need to find employment for the thousands who leave school every year. 
But the new president of the Barbados National Trust, Peter Stevens (right), has countered, saying there were other ways to revitalise Bridgetown that did not cost half as much as the proposed Hyatt Hotel.
And in any event, the members of the National Trust “are not in the business of heritage simply because things are old”. (HLE)
