Better showing by Bajan chess men

BARBADOS’ men finished in the top half of the Chess Olympiad for the first time despite losing their final match against Denmark in Azerbaijan yesterday.

United States captured the gold medal ahead of Ukraine and Russia, but the youthful Bajans, ranked 103rd out of 180 teams at the start of the competition, took 90th place.

Barbados lost 3-1 to 42nd ranked Denmark in the 11th and last round of games at Crystal Hall in the capital city, Baku.

It was always going to be a tall order for Barbados to upstage a Denmark team that fielded a quartet of grandmasters but veteran International master Terry Farley, playing on board 4, put down a top performance to overcome Allan Stig Rasmussen. (HG)
