A COUPLE ACCUSED of failing to send their children to school had despatched a handwritten letter to the Ministry of Education stating they wanted to protect them “from the ills of this system”.
The parents, from the tribe of Rastafari Jah Holy Faith, went on trial in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday when a senior school attendance officer said the couple referred to such ills as “hostility, bullying and sexual immorality”.
The couple had pleaded not guilty to the charge that on April 22, 2016, being the parents of a nine-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy they failed to register them at a school for full-time education. They are currently on $500 bail each.
The officer, Nkwa Daniel, read a letter laced with the phrase “I even I”, which she testified was from the parents who said it was not their intentions to deprive the siblings of an education but that their spiritual education was paramount. The parents wanted the children to understand the doctrine of Jah Holy Faith. (TKS)
