BARBADOS’ MAIN INCOME EARNER, tourism, is being severely plagued by high absenteeism in the workplace.
Anthony Sobers, the Barbados Productivity Council’s chief programme manager in research and business development services, said it was an ongoing problem across all employment sectors of Barbados, resulting in losses of up to $1 million a year.
Sobers, who stressed it needed an instant fix, was speaking to employees at the Nation Publishing Company’s monthly meeting at Nation House, Fontabelle, St Michael, yesterday.
Though he did not give exact figures, he explained that “high absenteeism happens a lot within the hotel sector because people normally [had to fill in for others] and sometimes can’t deliver as needed”. (MR)
