THE CONTENTIOUS BATTLE over the Barbados cement market has taken a new twist and looks set to escalate.

Arawak Cement Company Limited, in a paid newspaper advertisement yesterday, questioned the quality of what it called “bag and bulk cement in Barbados, Guyana and the OECS”.

And while Arawak did not name the importer, indicators were that it was referring to new market entrant Rock Hard Cement, which has broken the St Lucy manufacturer’s monopoly.

Fair Trading Commission (FTC) chief executive officer Sandra Sealy also confirmed her organisation had received a complaint from Arawak on the matter but said no investigation was ongoing since it had not received further correspondence from the company. (SC)
