Shots with kids at heart

THE UWI XI under captain Kyle Corbin won by five wickets over the Andre Russell-led Barbados Select XI, but the match result was of minimal significance when the “Champions For Charity” Twenty20 cricket match in aid of funds for the Barbados Child Care Board came off at the 3Ws Oval on Thursday night.

Instead, the real “champions” would have been the scores of spectators who braved the inclement weather, the players who magnanimously made themselves available, the Child Care Board and its beneficiaries.

The showers that fell almost all day and threatened to spoil the fund-raising project coordinated by UWI cricketer Chadwick Walton, abated in time for the likes of world-renowned cricket stars Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith and Russell to shine and bring warmth to adoring fans.

The Barbados Select XI batted first and although Smith (7), Bravo (15) and Russell (18) all perished after cameos, it took an electrifying, unbeaten 69 off 33 balls from local off-spinning all-rounder Ashley Nurse to lift them to a handy 187 for seven off 20 overs. (WH)
