OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Job well done police force

Grant us Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit on God, forever and ever Amen.  – (Collect for Proper 14)

Now that Crop Over has come and gone, praise is in order for those who worked hard to make it the resounding success it was. This is all the more so in light of fears that the threatening message posted on social media about Foreday Morning might have influenced some would-be revellers to change their minds about participating.

Both the Minister of Culture and the Royal Barbados Police Force had made it clear that every effort would be made to ensure that no stone would be left unturned in an all-out and significantly planned effort to ensure safety. And that is just what the members of the force did.

It was reported that “persons of interest” were held by police over the busy Crop Over weekend in an apparent pre-emptive strike to deter suspected troublemakers. In response, some lawyers talked about constitutional rights. Some have said that Barbados is fast becoming a police state. If that is so, who are making it so? Is it not the very criminals?

I do support the Royal Barbados Police Force, because you the members of the force are responsible for law and order. Therefore you have to do what you have to do.

I do hope that those criminals out there should have realised by now that the police are very serious in exercising their power and authority to maintain law and order in this country.

They had a duty to take such pre-emptive action to try to ensure that the Crop Over festivities were enjoyed by peaceful law-abiding citizens and visitors alike.

I do hope that those criminals out there would realise that the police are in charge and what you continue to place on social media will be an asset to the police force. Those arrests should not be an issue for debate. Thanks to the Royal Barbados Police Force for a job well done.
