GIVE THE ACCOLADES when people are alive, they say. National Hero Rt Excellent Sir Garry Sobers got his last week in a spectacular event, compliments of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited.

The outpouring of appreciation for the contribution of this Barbadian hero heated up the atmosphere at Kensington Oval where thousands celebrated the cricket legend’s 80th birthday with a celebrity cricket match.

From the Governor General’s box towering above the mecca of Caribbean cricket, Sir Garry looked on as a select group of cricketing greats from around the globe joined West Indies former stars and others for the celebrity T20 match.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart spoke of Sir Garry in glowing terms, as did his protégé Brian Lara, while a cultural group re-enacted the exploits of the greatest cricketer the world has even seen, in an impressive cultural presentation.

Not even periodic downpours of rain could stop Sir Garry’s Kensington Oval party which continued into the early hours of the morning.
