THE HIERARCHY OF THE National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) appear to be at loggerheads again.
According to the union’s general secretary Roslyn Smith, the failure by president Akanni McDowall to sign the cheques of some staff in a timely manner was the main reason behind a brief strike action by employees at the NUPW last week.
Just after 9 a.m. last Thursday, five ancillary employees walked off the job in protest at late payment of salaries.
They were joined in solidarity by 14 other NUPW staff members, including acting assistant deputy general secretary Wayne Walrond. The five workers affected were gardeners and maids.
A clearly annoyed Smith told the SUNDAY SUN that McDowall had not signed the workers’ cheques by last Wednesday’s deadline, which would have allowed for them to be paid early.
