Bishop calls for code of conduct

WITH GENERAL ELECTIONS drawing closer, the issue of vote buying has again emerged as an undesirable factor in local politics that needs to be addressed.

And yesterday, while Roman Catholic Bishop Jason Gordon did not speak to the matter directly when he addressed business leaders at the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) monthly business meeting at Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, he warned that a code of conduct for the two major political parties was crucial.

“Barbados inherited a Westminster system of governance which has been evolved several times in England. However, we have not yet evolved our political system to serve the civilisation we want to become,” he told members of the BCCI.

According to Gordon: “When the act of democracy becomes corrupted, an entire nation can be affected. It is for organisations such as the BCCI and you the private sector of Barbados to demonstrate leadership by acting ethically, with morality and with a conscience.” (GE)
