ST JOHN’S – West Indies, replying to India’s first innings total of 566 for eight declared, were 31 for one at the close on the second day of the first cricket Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here Friday.

Opener Rajendra Chandrika was out in the day’s penultimate over, edging seamer Mohammed Shami to wicket-keeper Wriddhimann Saha to be caught for 16.

Kraigg Brathwaite is not out on 11 and he has been joined at the crease by night-watchman Devendra Bishoo, who is yet to score.

Earlier, India, started the day on 302 for four, and were led to their massive total by captain Virat Kohli, who made a career-best 200, his maiden double century while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hit his third Test century off the West Indies before he was out for 113.

Overall, Kohli batted for 375 minutes and struck 24 fours off 283 balls while Ashwin hit 12 fours in his innings, which spanned 253 balls and 340 minutes.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra also contributed a breezy 53 off 68 balls with six fours and Saha made 40.

Leg-spinner Bishoo ended with three for 163 off 43 overs while Kraigg Brathwaite, bowling his uncomplicated off spin, took three for 65 in 14.5 overs. Pacer Shannon Gabriel captured two for 65 in 21 impressive overs.
