‘Stop parking’ on nesting grounds

THE BAY STREET BEACH on which Pirates’ Cove sits is one not habitually used by nesting Hawksbill female turtles.

But, said field director of the Barbados Sea Turtle project, Dr Darren Browne, the entity charged with protecting and studying the endangered marine animals has made contact with operators of the entertainment spot to ensure that an incident, similar to that which occurred last Sunday, did not occur again.

The field director was reacting to a social media post by a patron of a fete at the Bay Street business, Paula Wallace, who detailed her attempts to rescue a number of turtle hatchlings and the response she said she received from staff and other patrons at the fete.

“There were a few other people picking them up with me and passing them through, but the general sentiment was pretty lack lustre. I was moving garbage bags and crates to make sure there (sic) weren’t any getting trapped or lost,” she wrote, adding she was ordered out from behind the bar because she was impeding the bartenders.
