Importer: Standards Act was breached

THE SOLE entity allowed to import chicken wings into Barbados, the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC), is being accused of breaching the Standards Act.

The allegation came from a local poultry producer, who said the statutory body has not complied with the labelling standards outlined by the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI). The complaints follow the illegal importation of chicken wings last month.

But the minister who has oversight for the agency has rejected any notion that the BADMC’s operations were deficient.

“Tell the poultry industry that I tell them to grow up, stop being childish and nitpicking,” Minister of Commerce Donville Inniss said in response to the allegation. “The BADMC is a competent statutory entity empowered to import the chicken wings,” he said on Friday.
