BARBADIANS SHOULD take the recent spate of sudden death reports as a wake-up call.

That is the view of cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Dr Dawn Scantlebury, who said the Barbadian population could be at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases due to poor lifestyle choices.

Scantlebury said that in 2007, when she worked in the internal medicine department of the QEH, there were about one or two patients with heart attacks coming in every month but now the admissions occurred on a weekly basis.

Admitting that she could not speak to the recent deaths specifically, she said that all of the cases must be considered individually. However, she said that heart attack was the leading cause of sudden death and suggested that Barbadians take better care of their health. (LT)
