IT JUST wasn’t to be this time.
Track and field darling Akela Jones couldn’t defend her heptathlon title yesterday after handing it back to Georgia Bulldog rival Kendell Williams following a disastrous 800 metres run at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
It was complete heartbreak for the Kansas State University Wildcat senior, who held a 106-point advantage heading into that final event after leading Williams by as many as 216 points on the day.
But Jones struggled in her two weakest events, the javelin and 800, placing 19th with a throw of 34.56 metres before finishing 22nd in the 800 by clocking two minutes, 39.04 seconds. (JM)
