‘Outdated’ strategy

APPOINTMENTS based on seniority are outdated, a senior police officer said as he reflected on the performance of the force more than three years after promotions were put on hold because of a court case.

Currently, every high-ranking officer is acting in their position.

The officer, who requested anonymity, said this situation brought about because of a lawsuit by 17 officers against the last promotions in 2012, had resulted in “competent police officers being assigned management positions”.

“It has led to a situation where competent people have been chosen to do the work,” he said.

The court case has also resulted in a number of senior officers involved in the case being sidelined and their juniors appointed in acting positions which put them senior to their previous supervisory colleagues.
