OUT WITH THE controversial Tipping Fee and in comes the garbage Tax.

With Government searching for a way to find a fairer and more equitable system of paying for the management and disposal of waste in the country, Minister of Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe announced yesterday the new imposition was coming soon.

The Polluter Pays Principle Fee will replace the controversial Tipping Fee and will be implemented in such a way that everyone who creates garbage pays for its disposal and management.

Lowe said his ministry was awaiting final word on the policy from the Ministry of Finance and once it was returned, the decision would be taken to Cabinet before public consultation was commenced.

Speaking to the media yesterday from his Warrens Tower, St Michael office, Lowe touted the efficacy of the fee, saying it was perhaps one of the most forward-looking policies that the country had ever tackled in addressing the challenges associated with waste disposal.  (LK)
