JUST ONE YEAR after he took up the presidency of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Akanni McDowall is charging that political daggers have been drawn against him.
He told the DAILY NATION yesterday that “some former general secretaries and presidents of the union with political agendas” were conspiring to bring a no-confidence motion against him, aimed directly at curtailing efforts to get the Government to discuss pay increases and appointments for public officers.
“Clearly some people are not comfortable with my approach,” McDowall said, “and this is quite unfortunate because I have committed to members that I will insist that Government addresses two critical issues in particular – salary increases for civil servants and long outstanding appointments.
“Some people seem quite prepared to use their political affiliation to get between us and the Government in order to prevent this.”
He noted too that because his approach differed from that of past leaders, some people were branding him as “having something against seniors”. That, he said, could not be further from the truth. (RRM)
