Transport Board working on boosting fleet

THE TRANSPORT BOARD is working diligently on getting broken down buses back on the road and boosting its fleet.

This was the word from manager of quality assurance Sylvan Codrington, who was speaking to the media on the first day of a one-week workshop at the Weymouth facility for mechanics at the board, United Commercial Autoworks Limited and students of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.

Codrington said the fuel injection pump was among the main problems with buses off the road and the board purchased a Fuel Injection Pump Machine Tester to fix that problem in as little as two hours.

The board has brought in Paul Britton from the England-based Merlin Diesel Systems Ltd for one week in the first instance.

Codrington said the training was very hands-on and that the ten buses, which had been identified with fuel injection pumps issues, could be back up and running by the end of the week, providing there were no other issues.

“We’re trying everything possible to bring the fleet back to a respectable number where availability is concerned. That is something we’ve been working with for the past couple of weeks and we’re asking all the service providers to work with us in helping to enhance our bus availability,” he added.

The board has a fleet of 275 buses, and it was explained that a quarter of that number could have defects at any given time and be pulled off the road. The youngest of those buses are ten years old. (YB)
