Some of the more recent studies on sage indicate that the herb can improve memory and even possibly prevent Alzheimer’s disease. – www.naturalsociety

THE EXAMINATION PROCESS is in full swing in the Caribbean. As I observed students who were leaving the examination rooms, I recognised that many of them were still eating junk food at the lunch recess.

It must be noted that particular herbal plants are scientifically catalogued as brain foods and for the past two weeks I specifically wrote about them. Naturally because I was successful when I wrote examinations in my earlier days, I remember the good feelings which riveted through my body. I wish that all students who have to write exams are also successful. It is a feeling that you want to share.

In last week’s column titled Whiff Of Rosemary Will Do You Good, I also gave some very useful recipes to assist students who want to feed the brain natural brain foods. This week the spotlight is on silent doctor sage which has proven to be an excellent memory booster.

Research indicates that persons who are studying and want to retain information can inhale or consume sage. It has the potential to increase recall ability and can assist with memory retention.

A study published in June 2003’s Pharmacology Biochemistry And Behavior, looked at the effects of sage on memory recall tests. The researchers used 45 individuals in two groups – one group received a placebo while others received sage essential oil. The results revealed that “even those who were given the smallest amount of sage oil saw notable memory improvements”.

Furthermore, on www.sciencedaily.com, documented research states that “sage is being investigated as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease after earlier research . . . found that it inhibits an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE) which breaks down the chemical messenger acetylcholine”.

Sage, also known as salvia officinalis, is a very common kitchen garden herb in the Caribbean. When my kitchen garden was awarded prizes in the Agrofest kitchen garden contest, sage was one of the silent doctors which shone.

Spiritually sage is known as an herb which will assist with the travelling mind and should be grown at all homes in the Caribbean. To make a cup of herbal tea, place one teaspoon of dried sage to steep in a cup of boiled water for three minutes.

I am going to stimulate the brain with a galaxy relaxer bush bath containing dried sage, blue vervain and rosemary.
