TWELVE new garbage trucks by year-end.
Minister of Environment and National Beautification Trevor Prescod is hopeful that the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) will have those new vehicles before the end of the year.
The SSA has only been operating with between 18-20 trucks and last year the cash-strapped state-owned agency stopped paying overtime after the International Monetary Fund-facilitated Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme took effect.
Additionally, hundreds of SSA workers met with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) where they voted not to work weekends.
“Because of overtime and obsolete trucks that break down and the replacements not coming in on time, that continues to put pressure on the SSA, so we were trying to see if we could work miracles on the limited amount of trucks.
Government’s discussions about the new garbage trucks are expected to continue this week. (TG)
