FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, the Barbados Surfing Association combined its Scholastics Surfing Championships with one of their Surfer Of The Year events (SOTY) to make it an extremely exciting weekend at Brandens, Drill Hall Beach.
There were entries from 12 schools, in addition to the committed participants of the SOTY Series, who compete throughout the year for the overall championship points.
By combining these two events it gave the younger children, who were shy and timid to enter a SOTY event, a chance to experience one while competing for their school.
The Under-10 and Under-12 Divisions proved to be quite entertaining throughout the weekend, which had several exciting finals.
St Winifred’s have been the dominant school in surfing for the last decade and that dynasty has now extended to 12 years. The St Michael School was second with the Home School placing third.
Lester Vaughan, Queen’s College, St Gabriel’s, Wills Primary, Harrison College, Lockerby and St Angela’s/Convent completed the top ten.
One of the stars for St Winifred’s was Olivia Warden. The promising 15-year-old was queen of the waves in both the Under-16 and Under-18 divisions.
Winning the premier divisions and holding the two highest wave scores of the event were 21-year-old Chelsea Roett in the Open Women’s Division with an 8.50 and Dane Mackie in the Open Men’s Division with 8.63.
Among the top performers were 14-year-old Zander Venezia, a student of The St Michael School, who was tops in the Under-16 class and second in the Under-18 division. (PR/MK)
