PM ‘not worried’ about Union activity

IF MANY BARBADIANS are concerned about work stoppages or threats of industrial action by the nation’s major trade unions, the country’s Prime Minister isn’t losing much sleep, if any, over them.

That’s because Freundel Stuart traces the recent labour disputes to a “transition” in trade union leadership now being experienced by the major workers’ bodies.

That, in essence, was Stuart’s reaction to the work stoppages or threats of industrial action being voiced by private and public sector workers.

Incidentally, he made his feelings known on the same day that members of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) and the Barbados Union of Teachers were meeting to deliver an ultimatum to the Government that unless Minister of Education Ronald Jones communicated with them by next week over an unresolved problem with the teachers, the latter wouldn’t be in the classroom later this week.
