You’re wrong, Sir Charles

HOLD YOUR HORSES, Sir Charles.

Apparently, local breeding is subsidised after all.

Chief executive officer Rosette Peirce has dismissed Sir Charles Williams’ claims that the Barbados Turf Club is trying to kill the breeding industry. She revealed that the BTC donates more than $100 000 annually to the Barbados Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Peirce disclosed the figure after Williams, Barbados’ most recognised breeder, publicly lambasted the Turf Club for introducing a new subsidy to support importing horses.

“In terms of supporting local breeders, we also subsidise that too by donating $135 000 to the breeding industry, and we do not determine how it is spent either, as we give it to the Barbados Thoroughbred Breeders Association, who then decides how it is shared out,” explained Peirce.
