THE BARBADOS SECONDARY Teachers’ Union remains adamant the child involved in violence against a teacher at a St Michael secondary school should be expelled.

After a meeting at that school which involved the BSTU, Barbados Union of Teachers and staff of the school, president Mary Redman said they would be writing to the chairman of the school’s board in this regard.

She said any student who commits a violent act against a teacher could not be allowed to stay at the school.

“Tonight we will be writing and making available to the school our letter recommending expulsion of the student. I think this is an area where both unions are in agreement. The principal understands, accepts and is demonstrating a commitment to zero tolerance to violence against teachers so it is a united effort to make sure this is dealt with quickly and effectively and it sends a message to students throughout the country that this type of violence will not be tolerated,” she said.

Redman said both unions would be working towards a programme dealing with violence in schools, outlining steps how they will go forward. (CA)
