Lecturer calls for racial unity

A UNIVERSITY HISTORIAN says it is time for Barbadians of all races and classes to set aside their differences and work in the interest of the country.

Dr Henderson Carter, of the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), said while the celebration of the country’s 50 years of Independence was a time for reflection, it was also the prime opportunity for unity.

He made the suggestion as he summed up the lessons citizens could draw from the 1870s crisis, an era that was the primary focus of his lecture on Tuesday night titled Fighting Confederation, Escaping Crown Colony Government.

He said Whites still held on to economic power despite losing political power in Barbados in 1951 with universal adult suffrage.
