I DON’T BELIEVE that Barbadians take time to consider fire safety and the effect of not having a workable fire extinguisher in their homes. They are many who also do not take time to insure their homes and contents against fire, water damage, perils and disasters.
If a house fire breaks out while we are sleeping, not many people would be in a position to deal with such a calamity. Then there is the question of security bars. Do people know that they should have at least one or two windows or doors which would allow then entry to a safe place outdoors, or are all the doors and windows fully barricaded and locked?
How many people take time out to invest in fire extinguishers or smoke alarms?
Too many Barbadians have lost their homes to fire only because they never took advantage of properly protecting their homes from fire.
The harsh reality is that when we fail to prepare for events such as a fires, we are also unprepared when disaster strikes. We do not need to wait until Fire Month to put the necessary plans in place. Wherever we can make simple changes that can help us to stay safer at home, we should.
When it comes to our personal safety and the safety of loved ones, we must hope for the best but prepare for the worst. A safe home is possible.
