THERE COULD HAVE BEEN no contingency plan to mitigate Thursday’s strike that crippled operations at the Bridgetown Port.
This was the assessment from its chief executive officer, David Jean-Marie, who was speaking in the wake of the action that saw scores of workers off the job.
But what was of concern to the port’s boss at the time was what would happen to those cargo ships that were expected to dock in the coming days.
The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) called out its port arm as a show of support for striking Barbados Water Authority (BWA) workers. All the port’s gates were closed and while the lone small cruise ship, Sea Cloud 2, was allowed to berth and the passengers were cleared to disembark, five cargo ships remained in limbo. (HLH)
