Industrial action at the University of the West Indies (UWI) which was scheduled for today has been called off.
General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Senator Toni Moore made this announcement at the 3Ws Oval, at the Cave Hill campus yesterday, where she said the Union and university management finally reached agreement on several issues, including a long overdue pay increase.
Speaking to the media after the more than hour-long session, Moore recalled that the BWU had written the university on Tuesday to put them on notice about the looming action.
“There was a specific incident which we considered to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back . . . that situation in question is very personal to one staff member so I wouldn’t want to elaborate on it. But that was one where the regular channels to go through would not have made any sense so we needed some other kind of action,” she said. (TG)
