Team Barbados back in pool tonight

AFTER A STRONG START to the 2016 CARIFTA Swimming Championships on Tuesday in Martinique, Team Barbados will be back in the pool tonight, looking to add to their tally of 13 medals.

In this morning’s session, several more athletes qualified for finals and the qualifying times place them in medal contention.

In the 200 metre freestyle, McCallum Clarke is third overall in the 11-12 boys’ age group in 2 minutes 15.72 seconds and Roan Baker advances sixth overall in 2:17.81. Clarke also has the fouth fastest time of 5:12.13 in the 400 Individual Medley and Eric Lashley clocked 5:39.46.

Alex Sobers has the third fastest time of 1:58.17 in the 15 to 17 age group, but Damon St Prix was ninth and missed the cut with 2:01.55.

Tristan Pragnell could claim his first gold medal in the 11-12 boys’ 100M backstroke. He leads all qualifiers with 1:08.11, but teammate Zachary Taylor did not advance with 1:17.69. Jack Kirby was fourth overall in 60.43 among the 15-17 boys.

None of the swimmers reached the finals in the 50M butterfly. Pragnell was ninth in 31.27 seconds and Eric Lashley 21st with 35.34. Luis Sebastian Weekes was 18th overall among the senior boys in 27.34 seconds.

In the 4×100 metre medley relays, the 11-12 girls and boys, the 13-14 girls and the 15-17 boys all qualified for the finals. (SAT)
