CHAMPION junior sprinter, Mario Burke finally got some outdoor competition under his belt on Saturday when his University of Houston team competed at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Burke, the reigning Carifta Under-20 Boys’ 100m and 200m title- holder, won the 100 metres in 10.34 seconds with a stiff tailwind of 3.4m/s on his back. Justin Jenkins of Sam Houston State was second in 10.51 seconds while James Arnett of Houston was third in 10.64 seconds.
The former Harrison College student was also a member of two Houston relay teams. Burke, along with Leshon Collins, James Arnett and Cameron Burrell won the men’s 4×100 metres relay in an impressive 39.86 seconds.
Burke, who turned 19 last week, came back later in the day to help Houston to a second place finish in the men’s 4×400 metre relay. Houston with Burke, Amere Lattin, Raymund Clarke and Drake Murphy, clocked 3:13.00 while Stephen F. Austin University crossed the line first in 3:12.93.
