A HIGH COURT JUDGE is not happy with the lengthy delays to sexual harassment legislation.

Justice Jacqueline Cornelius said the draft bill has been in the works for the past 15 years, with no indication when it would become a reality.

“We question the failure to pass this legislation after 15 years of discussion, drafting and consultation,” said the jurist, who has worked with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) on projects related to sexual harassment, violence and maintenance of children.

She said even the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) had reportedly called for sexual harassment legislation following complaints from public sector workers.

“The Minister assured the union that sexual harassment legislation was at the top of her ministry’s agenda, where indeed it has been for the last 15 years,” said the judge, a human rights and gender advocate. (WILLCOMM)
