Attorney General Dale Marshall, wants Barbadians to be a little more patient when it comes to Government’s tackling of crime.
Marshall, QC, the MP for St Joseph, said at a post-Cabinet press conference yesterday that it would take more than 15 months for efforts by the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Defence Force to wrestle all criminal elements to the ground.
Marshall made the plea after being questioned by reporters about the country 34th killing, with another four months left on the calendar.
“We’ve seen levels of decay over the last ten years that are unprecedented. We were stridently warning the last administration that we were on a dreadful path and urgent steps need to be taken to arrest it. The first reality we have to confront is that it is fanciful to believe you can turn around ten years of decay, of abandonment of the people of Barbados, in 14 months. We are committed to carrying it out, but to encourage people to believe there is an overnight solution would be wrong of us.”
Marshall, who was also Attorney General in 2006 when the country recorded 35 murders, said this current administration had come up with a “well thought out strategy we firmly believe is bearing fruit”. (BA)
