Bajans go down to Ecuador

THE MARGIN for error has gone from slim to none.

Barbados are staring defeat in the face, having lost both singles matches in straight sets on a disappointing first day of their opening round Group I Americas tie against hosts Ecuador at the Portoviejo Tennis Club yesterday.

Playing on the unfamiliar clay, first-timer Adam Hornby didn’t have the best of debuts while failing to win a single game in his 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 defeat against Emilio Gomez before Bajan No. 1 Darian King went under 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to Ivan Endara.

The results leave the visitors in utter desperation as they are forced to win all three remaining rubbers – starting with today’s doubles match pitting King and Haydn Lewis against Gomez and Giovanni Lapentti – to avoid a second defeat in as many years versus Ecuador. (JM)
