CHILD RIGHTS DO not suggest that a child should be rude and disregard authority figures.
Noting that the whole concept is often misunderstood, child rights advocate and attorney Faith Marshall-Harris made that point on Brass Tacks Sunday yesterday.
While the issue was not ventilated on the programme, the still unfolding disciplinary issue which has reached the level of the Ministry of Education surrounding a 14-year-old girl from Springer Memorial Secondary School formed the basis for the discussion.
The girl was reportedly denied her lunch break, suspended and barred from classes after failing to carry out an instruction from the year head and the principal.
Her mother, Elecia Weekes, refused an offer of a transfer to the Daryll Jordan Secondary School (formerly St Lucy), and the final decision was a transfer to Ellerslie Secondary. (YB)
