Duguid’s loyalty called into question

ONE OF Dr William Duguid’s biggest hurdles if he is ratified to run in his old Christ Church West seat will be to convince the voters of his loyalty, said two political scientists.

In the latest twist in the constituency following the expulsion of sitting Member of Parliament Dr Maria Agard from the Barbados Labour Party, Duguid’s name has resurfaced as a possible candidate for the next election.

But director of the Caribbean Development Research Services, Peter Wickham, said because the riding was a BLP stronghold, it was the opportune time to introduce a new face while a returning Duguid would have to confront the issue of abandonment.

“I am more inclined towards the fresh option . . . . Duguid would probably win and it is also clear that he has support at the grassroots level, but he also has baggage associated with the fact that he abandoned the constituency once before and would have [to] constantly defend his decision to leave and assure constituents of his loyalty this time around,” Wickham reasoned.
