NCSA reaching out to families

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL on Substance Abuse (NCSA) is taking a different approach to the fight against addiction in 2016.

Rather than focusing on at-risk youth, the thrust will be on dealing with at-risk families. The argument is that the youth return to the same families and communities after being rehabilitated – thus the need to refocus.

That change in strategy was revealed by Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite during a service to launch Drug Awareness Month at the Bank Hall Church of the Nazarene recently.

He said walks through the various communities have confirmed to him that the country has a problem with youths in the community and that he has also observed that more young women seem to be abusing illegal substances. He said, too, that the NCSA knows that more school-aged children are using drugs.
