Legend of the sea

FRED WATSON, a fisherman from St John, has been casting his nets at the surging tide for more than 78 years in order to put food on the table for his 16 children.

Watson was selected, as the oldest active fisherman and seafarer, to hand over the commemorative Broken Trident to the youngest sea cadet and sea scout on its arrival in the Careenage aboard a flotilla yesterday, as part of the grand launch of Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations.

He had previously been proclaimed as Barbados’ best fisherman.

Watson’s other achievements include awards from former prime minister and father of Independence Errol Barrow, late Governor General Dame Nita Barrow, and former prime minister Owen Arthur.
