Monsignor Vincent: God calls the humble

GOD SEEKS OUT the little people and not the strong and powerful. This was the message delivered by Monsignor Vincent Harcourt Blackett during the Christmas Midnight Mass at the St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church last night.

He said St Luke tried to show how the birth of Jesus was a way of God showing his power. “God does not go looking for the mighty and the powerful, but God goes for the humble people, the little people…,” he said.

He noted that many in the church still believed those with economic power were of utmost importance but he argued this was not the case.

“The important people are not the ones that strut in once or twice a year. They are not the ones that are important but it is the little people that are coming daily…. That is where the power of the church lies,” he said.

During the early hours of this morning at the Bay Street cathedral, Monsignor Vincent said the service would be his last Christmas service as head of that church. On January 5, 2016 he will be transferred to Our Lady Queen of the Universe on Black Rock Main Road. (TG)
