HOTEL WORKERS will begin the 2015/16 winter tourist season with a smile on their faces following news they are getting a wage increase from next week.

A settlement reached between the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) and the Barbados Workers’ Union will see them receiving bigger pay packs from December 15.

Speaking at the BHTA’s quarterly meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Zentre yesterday, chief executive officer Sue Springer said the employees would receive a total eight per cent increase in wages spread over three years. This would be two and a half per cent increase in the first year, three per cent in the second, and two and a half in the third, compounded each year.

Springer said the hotel workers had been “patient and supportive over the past five years while the hotel sector struggled to survive during the global crisis and downturn in visitor arrivals”. (GC)
