LOCAL FEMALE official Tonia Deane has joined an elite list of Barbadian referees who are FIFA accredited.

The assistant referee’s appointment now takes Barbados’ international referee tally to seven, with four males accredited along with three women.

Late last year fellow assistant referee Shannon Gibson received her appointment after leading female referee Gillian Martindale made the plea for more female referees to join the elite panel so as to better their chances of being selected for major international tournaments.

Deane, a former national athlete and footballer, began her officiating quest almost nine years ago but took a break for maternal reasons and to prolong her playing career for club and country. (ROG)
