DR SHANNON DOUGHLIN won an intense, emotionally-charged contest against Tyrese Knight to capture the A Class table tennis title for the first time when the National Championships concluded at the Table Tennis Centre on Saturday night.

Mark Dowell maintained his status as national champion in emphatic fashion with a comprehensive victory over Doughlin, but the most fascinating fixture of the evening was the absorbing contest between Doughlin and Knight.

Knight chopped down the former Caribbean champion in the first two games 11-8, 13-11 in front of an appreciative crowd.

Spurred on by his wife, Doughlin fought back to take games three and four – though not without drama.

Doughlin wasted two opportunities to take game point in game three but eventually produced a loop drive that Knight was unable to return. (PH)
