HIGH ABSENTEEISM levels continue to plague Barbadian businesses.
Just released figures from the Barbados Productivity Council show that the financial sector has been most hard-hit, registering an absenteeism rate of 17.9 per cent last year.
Accommodation and construction sectors also had double digit rates of 14.8 and 10.2 per cent, respectively.
On the opposing end, the area that recorded the lowest level of employees not failing to report for work or remaining at work as scheduled was transportation, storage and communication at 7.7 per cent. Agriculture stood at 8.2, wholesale and retail at 9.5 and manufacturing at 9.6.
“Absenteeism remains a serious issue and continues to be a great obstacle to productivity, profitability and competitiveness,” said economist Nadia Skeete, who coordinated the project that surveyed 305 companies between April and August, though there was a sample set of 483. (WILLCOMM)
