THE POLICE CERTIFICATE OF CHARACTER is one of the biggest obstacles to a young person getting a job, says attorney Verla De Peiza.
Speaking during a church hall meeting on violence in Restoration Ministries, Brittons Hill, St Michael, De Peiza said Barbados’ future was being incarcerated for petty crime.
“There is a generation [now] that doesn’t view marijuana use in the same way [as previous generations]. When a young person is arrested, charged and found guilty for a small amount of marijuana which was for their personal use, they are automatically out of society and their certificate of character will reflect that,” she said.
Because of this, De Peiza, who is also a criminologist, said there was an entire generation sitting apart from society. (CA)
