RESIDENTS IN THE SOUTH of St Lucia can expect a more regular supply of water with Wednesday’s launch of the Vieux-Fort Water Supply Redevelopment Project.
The project, like the John Compton Dam Rehabilitation Project, is a collaborative effort of the Government of Saint Lucia, the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCo) Inc., and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
Division Chief of the CDB Andrew Dupigny, said Vieux-Fort is on its way to becoming a critical region for economic growth in Saint Lucia.
“Apart from the International Airport, the National Stadium, and existing industries, plans are well established for tourism and commercial developments in the area,” he said. “There are however serious challenges relating to the quality and quantity of the water supply in this area which could present major issues relating to these development plans. The project aims to address the water challenges in a very holistic manner.”
The project will upgrade the existing water supply infrastructure, and address the issues of non-revenue water and water shed restoration and management.
Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Dr Kenny Anthony commented on the impact the project would have on the local economy.
“It is a sizeable investment for our community coming in at over $51 million over the next 12 to 18 months. Within the next few weeks the commencement of the administrative complex in Vieux Fort [will add] another $63 million, and in addition to the work at the airport, I think that we can look forward to a buoyant economy in the south, at least during the next few months.”
The expected outcome of the project is an efficient, reliable, climate resilient, sustainable supply of potable water to Vieux-Fort and its environs. The project is at the stage of recruiting a project manager. (PR)
